My father gave up on three dating sites. This one is for him.
I am Judy. I run DatingAppCritic with a small team. This page explains why the site exists, how we decide what goes in a review, and how we get paid.
Why this site exists
My father was in his sixties when my mother died. He was still walking five miles most mornings, still the first one up, still curious about everything. What he was not was finished.
The women friends introduced him to were at a different stage of life. Settled in ways he was not, looking for something quieter than he wanted. The conversations were polite and went nowhere. He was not after a bridge partner. He wanted someone with the same appetite for the day that he had, and after a while he stopped saying so out loud because of how it sounded.
He tried three dating sites. He paid for two of them. He gave up on all three inside four months.
The part I could not let go was not that it was hard. Dating is hard at any age. It was that nobody had told him which of those sites were worth his money before he spent it. The lists he found online all recommended everything, and the sites they recommended most enthusiastically turned out to be the ones paying the most.
So we write the reviews I wish he had been able to read.
What we cover, and what we do not
One thing: age gap dating for older men seeking younger women, in the United States and Canada.
That is narrower than it could be, deliberately. We are not a general dating site directory. We do not cover hookup apps, we do not cover platforms where both people are over fifty and the age gap is incidental, and we do not cover the reverse pairing. Those are all legitimate subjects. They are not this one, and a site that covers everything tends to be useful for nothing.
It also means we will tell you when a platform is popular but wrong for you. SilverSingles is a well-run site with millions of members, and its matching algorithm will steer a man of fifty-eight toward women in their fifties no matter what he sets his filters to. That is a good product doing its job. It is the wrong tool if the age gap is the point, and we say so.
How we review
Every review is built from the same sources: the platform’s own published material and pricing, its App Store and Google Play listings, and independent reviews and user feedback from people who have paid for accounts.
We are clear about what that is and is not. These are not reports from our own paid accounts. Where a review makes a claim about cost or features, it comes from published material. Where it makes a claim about what members are like, it comes from other people’s reported experience, and we say when reviewers disagree rather than picking whichever version sounds better.
What we weigh, in order:
- Is it actually built for this? A wide age preference has to be the product, not a filter setting three menus deep.
- Is anybody there? Member depth in real cities matters more than any feature list. A platform with beautiful design and nobody within two hours of you is worthless.
- Is the pricing honest? We look hard at introductory rates that jump on renewal, at credit systems that drain faster than anyone expects, and at cancellation flows that are harder than signup.
- Does it verify age? Any platform that is vague about confirming its members are adults does not get listed here at all. That has ruled out several names you will find on other lists.
How we make money, plainly
Some links on this site earn us a commission when someone signs up through them. That is the whole business model and we would rather you knew it up front than found out later.
Two things follow from that, and they are the reason to trust anything here:
- Commission does not affect the order. Platforms that pay us nothing appear in our rankings, and platforms that pay us well have been marked not recommended.
- We publish the bad reviews. Two of the five platforms we cover carry warnings rather than recommendations. One has repositioned itself away from our readers entirely, and one has been described by other reviewers as having almost no genuine members. Writing that costs us money. We write it anyway, because a recommendation only means something if we are willing to withhold it.
Nobody has ever paid us for placement, a score, or a kind word, and nobody will.
Who we are
The Dating App Critic team is small. I edit everything that goes out and I am accountable for it. If a review is wrong, that is on me, and I would genuinely rather hear about it than not.

On the obvious question
An age gap between consenting adults is legal in both countries we cover, and it is unremarkable on the platforms we review. It is also something a lot of men are quietly embarrassed to be looking for, because of how it sounds when said out loud. My father was.
This site is written without that flinch, and without pretending the gap is nothing. It comes with real questions about life stage, energy, money and time. Our guides take those seriously rather than talking around them.
Everything here is for adults aged 18 and over, on both sides. That is not negotiable and it is not a formality.

Do you actually test these dating sites yourselves?
No, and we say so on every review. Our reviews are built from each platform’s own published material and pricing, its app store listings, and independent reviews and feedback from people who have paid for accounts.
We would rather tell you exactly where a claim comes from than imply first-hand testing we have not done. Where reviewers disagree, we say that too instead of picking the version that reads better.
How do you make money?
Some links earn us a commission when someone signs up through them. That is the entire business model.
It does not affect the rankings. Platforms that pay us nothing appear in them, and two of the five we cover carry warnings rather than recommendations, which costs us money. Nobody has ever paid for placement or a score.
Why do you only cover older men and younger women?
Because a site that covers everything is useful for nothing. We do not review hookup apps, general 50+ platforms where the age gap is incidental, or the reverse pairing.
The advice that works for one of those does not transfer to the others, and being narrow is what lets us say when a popular platform is the wrong tool for our readers.

A small team, edited by Judy, who founded the site after watching her father give up on three dating platforms having paid for two of them.

What platforms will you not list?
Any platform that is vague about verifying its members are adults. That is a hard line and it has excluded several names that appear on other best-of lists.
