They tend to be the best-funded platforms in this space. Real customer service, working apps, photo verification, and enough members that a search in a mid-sized city returns something. If you want a partner within a decade of your own age, this is where to look and you will probably find someone.
What they are not built for is a wide gap. That is not a flaw. It is what they are for.
Why the filters do not fix it
Most older dating platforms let you set an age preference, which makes it look as though a wide gap is simply a setting away. In practice two things get in the way.
The first is arithmetic. On a platform where the youngest member is 50, a man of 58 who wants to meet someone in her thirties is searching for people who are not there. No filter creates members.

Large mainstream platforms
Match.com, Chemistry.com, eDarling, PerfectMatch and FirstMet are general dating sites with big memberships across every age band. You can meet someone younger on any of them, and plenty of people have. But the age gap is incidental rather than the premise, which means your profile has to do the work of explaining itself, and that is most of the difficulty.

What to do before you pay for anything
- Decide which you actually want. A partner near your own age, or a wide gap. The answer sends you to two different sets of platforms and it is worth being honest with yourself about it.
- Build a free profile first. Every platform worth using lets you register and search without paying. Set your real age range and radius and count what comes back.
- Judge by who is active, not by how it looks. A beautiful app with nobody within two hours of you is worth less than a dated one with members in your city.

Never send money, gift cards or banking details to anyone you have not met, whatever the story and however long you have been talking. Be wary of anyone who moves fast emotionally or wants to leave the platform in the first few messages. Use video chat before you invest real time in someone.
