Privacy policy
This site collects almost nothing. There are no accounts, no comments, no newsletter and no tracking pixels. What does happen is set out below, including exactly what the matching tool passes on.
The short version. We do not ask for your name, your email or your age unless you choose to give them. We set no cookies of our own and run no advertising trackers. Two things do leave this site: your browser requests a font from Google, and if you use the matching tool your answers travel with you to the platform you are sent to. Both are explained below.
What we do not do
Worth stating first, because it covers most of what people worry about.
- There are no user accounts and no logins on this site.
- There is no comment section, no forum and no newsletter.
- We do not set any cookies of our own.
- We run no advertising network, no retargeting pixels and no social media trackers.
- We do not sell, rent or share personal information with anyone, at any price.
- We do not build profiles of readers or attempt to identify you.
Server logs
Like almost every website, our web host records a line each time a page is requested. That line typically includes the IP address making the request, the time, the page asked for, and the browser identifying itself.
We do not use these logs to identify readers. They exist so the host can keep the site running and investigate abuse. They are held by our hosting provider under its own retention schedule and deleted on that schedule.
The matching tool
This is the one place where information you enter goes somewhere else, so it is worth reading properly.
The matching tool at the top of every page asks two or three questions: your age band, who you are looking to meet, and the age range that suits you. Nothing you answer is stored on this site. It is held only in your browser while you are on the page and is gone when you close the tab.
When you press the final button, those answers travel with you to the dating platform as part of the web address, so the platform knows roughly which audience the visit came from and we can see which answers lead to sign-ups. What is passed is the age band you chose, who you said you were looking for, and the age range you selected. It contains no name, no email address and nothing that identifies you personally.
Once you arrive on that platform you are on their site, under their privacy policy, and they will set their own cookies. We have no control over and no access to anything that happens there.
Affiliate links
Some links here are affiliate links. Following one will usually set a cookie belonging to the dating platform or its affiliate network, so that it can attribute the referral to us. That cookie is set by them, on their domain, not by us.
We receive reports on how many people signed up, not on who they are. How we are paid is set out on our affiliate disclosure page.
Fonts
The typeface used across this site is requested from Google Fonts when a page loads. Making that request reveals your IP address to Google, in the same way that loading any third-party file does.
No cookie is set by the font request and it carries nothing else about you. We are noting it because it is a transfer to a third party and you are entitled to know it happens.
Analytics
We do not currently run any analytics software on this site. No Google Analytics, no alternative, no heatmaps, no session recording.
If that changes, this page will be updated to name the tool and say what it collects before it goes live.
If you email judy@datingappcritic.com, we hold that message and your address for as long as it takes to deal with what you asked about, and for a reasonable period afterwards in case the matter comes back.
We do not add anyone to a mailing list. We do not pass addresses to anyone. Ask us to delete a message and we will.
Adults only
This site is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and the matching tool has no age option below 18 by design.
If you believe a person under 18 has sent us information, email us and it will be deleted.
Your rights
Because we hold so little, most requests are simple to answer. Depending on where you live you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, and to object to how it is used.
If you are in California, that includes rights under the CCPA and CPRA, including the right to know and the right to delete. We do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it, so there is nothing for you to opt out of. If you are in Canada, PIPEDA applies. If you are in the UK or the European Union, the UK GDPR and GDPR apply.
To exercise any of these, email judy@datingappcritic.com. In practice, unless you have emailed us before, we are unlikely to hold anything about you at all, and we will tell you that plainly.
Changes
If our practices change, this page changes with them, and the effective date at the top is updated. Where a change is significant, we will say what changed rather than quietly replacing the text.
Who to contact
Judy, at judy@datingappcritic.com. There is more about who we are on our about page, and our terms of use covers the rest of the formal side.
Not legal advice
This page describes how this site handles information, in plain language. It is a policy, not legal advice, and it is not a substitute for advice about your own situation.
Questions people ask us
Do you use cookies?
We set none of our own. There are no accounts, no comments and no advertising trackers on this site.
Following an affiliate link usually sets a cookie belonging to the dating platform or its affiliate network so the referral can be attributed. That cookie is set by them on their domain, not by us.
What happens to my answers in the matching tool?
Nothing is stored on this site. Your answers live in your browser while you are on the page and are gone when you close the tab.
When you press the final button, the age band, who you are looking for and the age range travel with you to the dating platform as part of the web address. There is no name, no email and nothing that identifies you personally.
Do you use Google Analytics?
No. There is no analytics software on this site at all, and no heatmaps or session recording.
If that ever changes, this page will be updated to name the tool and say what it collects before it goes live.
Do you sell my data?
No, and there is very little to sell. We do not sell, rent or share personal information with anyone.
Under California law we do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it, which means there is nothing for you to opt out of.
How do I ask what you hold about me?
Email judy@datingappcritic.com and ask. You can also ask for it to be corrected or deleted.
In practice, unless you have emailed us before, we are unlikely to hold anything about you at all, and we will say so plainly rather than making you fill in a form.
